Reactions and problems following a rape

Youth rape – a concealed phenomenon

By Grete Kvalheim (2005)

Rape victims may suffer a long series of problems, both physically and mentally. The mental consequences of a rape are often extensive and long term, and can manifest themselves in physical problems, maybe for the rest of their lives.

A feeling of powerlessness, anxiety, a feeling of guilt, shame, suicidal thoughts and various physical problems such as eating disorders are all typical consequences. The most common physical reactions are nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea, dizziness, pain in the head, stomach and muscle pains.

These are normal reactions to an abnormal situation. All reactions are “the right ones”. Victims just have to react, rather than keeping everything locked inside.
